Just when I was berating myself for not doing more to take my writing further, surprising things happen. An editor at one of my dream publications (who I pitched months ago) wrote back asking me to pitch more ideas. Then, a fellow writer recommended my name for a ghost-writing project (which I had to turn down because it was a very short deadline and I already had a lot on my plate). Work comes in, the result of pitches and LOI’s sent ages ago. Twitter brings in new followers – editors, other writers. Some come bearing assignments, others cheery one-liners that make it worth spending time scanning my feed.
And every month, contributor copies of lovely publications arrive with my name on the masthead. (The cheques take longer , but they usually show up without much follow-up.)
And that’s how the freelancing life flows. Be open to opportunities, ask for work and say ‘yes’ when you find something you would like to do.
You never know what wonderful surprises are waiting for you.
