Kiss me

m_02(Actually, don’t.)

Mr.R and I were at a screening today of this 2004 Portuguese film starring Marisa Cruz (Laura) as a woman in small-town Portugal in the 50s , who in addition to other things, is besotted with Marilyn Monroe. The story is set against the backdrop of Salazar’s dictatorship and the movement to overthrow him. There’s not much political drama happening (although the potential to include some was tremendous) and the plot tends to focus on Laura’s life in Tavira, her love affairs, her relationship with her mother & son and her attempts to be like Monroe.

I enjoyed the film for the clothes, the girly stuff and the location -crisp, clean, neat and orderly – just my kind of place! The ‘plot’ was rather thin on the ground, the characters a bit stilted, the scenes predictable. Despite that, as always, watching a foreign language film is always interesting. We must see more.
